How Multi-State Lottery Games Work
Powerball and Mega Millions are both multi-state games, meaning dozens of state lotteries pool ticket sales into one shared prize pool rather than each state running its own separate jackpot. That's the whole reason these games can reach headline-grabbing totals in the hundreds of millions or even billions — a single state's ticket sales alone couldn't fund a jackpot that size, but combined sales across 45+ states can. Each participating state still sells its own tickets through its own licensed retailers and handles its own prize claims and tax withholding, but the drawing itself, the numbers, and the jackpot are identical no matter which state you bought your ticket in.
Millionaire for Life works a little differently: instead of one massive jackpot, it guarantees a fixed prize — typically $1,000 a day for life for the top prize — paid out over the winner's lifetime or a minimum guaranteed period, whichever is longer. That structure trades the chance at a nine-figure jackpot for meaningfully better odds and a steady, predictable payout, which is part of why it's grown in popularity as a complement to the jackpot-chasing games.
Whichever game you're following, the drawings themselves work the same basic way: numbered balls are drawn from mechanical machines, live and under independent oversight, at a set time on a set schedule. Nothing about the process — sales volume, jackpot size, or which retailer sold a ticket — changes the odds of any individual combination being drawn. Every draw is a fresh, independent event.

Massachusetts MassCash, Cash4Life, and Lucky For Life are built into the results hub layout already but are waiting on a dedicated data source before going live, rather than shipping estimated or manually-entered numbers.
