The majority of lottery tickets sold in the U.S. are Quick Picks — the terminal selects the numbers for you at random. There's a common belief that hand-picking "meaningful" numbers gives you better odds, or conversely that Quick Picks are luckier because "the machine knows." Neither is true. A machine-generated combination and a hand-picked combination have exactly the same probability of matching the drawn numbers, because the drawing itself doesn't know or care how a ticket's numbers were chosen.
Where your choice of numbers does matter is in a completely different way: how much you'd have to split a jackpot with if you win. Because so many players gravitate toward birthdays (which caps numbers at 1–31), anniversaries, and other meaningful dates, tickets built from those numbers are disproportionately likely to be duplicated by other winners on the rare occasion the jackpot is hit. A Quick Pick, or any combination that includes numbers above 31, statistically reduces (but never eliminates) the odds of sharing a jackpot with someone else — a genuinely useful fact, even though it has zero effect on whether you win in the first place.
