What to Do After a Winning Ticket
If this checker shows a match, the very first thing to do is sign the back of the physical ticket. An unsigned ticket can legally be claimed by whoever holds it, so signing immediately establishes you as the owner even before you make any other decisions. Take a clear photo and a photocopy of both sides, and store the original ticket somewhere safe — a lost or damaged unsigned ticket is very difficult to replace, and lottery rules generally treat the physical ticket, not a photo of it, as the thing that gets paid out.
Prize claiming works differently depending on the amount. Smaller prizes — typically anything from a few dollars up to a few hundred, depending on the game and state — can usually be cashed right at the retailer where you bought the ticket, or at any other licensed lottery retailer. Mid-size prizes generally require a visit to a regional lottery office, and jackpot-level wins almost always require an appointment at the state lottery's main claim center, along with a government-issued photo ID and, in some states, additional paperwork before the prize is released.
Every state sets its own deadline for claiming a prize, usually somewhere between 90 days and a year from the draw date — waiting too long means forfeiting the prize entirely, so don't let a winning ticket sit in a drawer. It's also worth thinking through practical decisions before you claim: whether to take a lump sum or (for eligible prizes) installment payments, who you tell in the meantime, and whether a financial advisor or attorney makes sense for a larger win. None of that changes the numbers this checker just compared for you, but it does make the difference between a smooth payout and a stressful one.
